William R. “Bill” Coburn, age 90, resident of Willard, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at The Willows in Willard, OH after a brief illness. He was born in Hicksville, OH to the late Estel and Thelma (Kiracofe) Coburn.
Immediately after graduation in 1944 from Willard HS at the age of 17, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served in the Asian Pacific Region during WWII. He was a member of the Willard American Legion, VFW, Willard Elks Lodge 1370 and was a 32 Degree Mason. 0n June 12, 2010 he was selected to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington DC to visit the WWII Memorial. For many years Bill was a member of the American Legion Honor Guard serving at Military funerals.
After his retirement from St. Regis Paper Company, Bill enjoyed many years with his buddies fishing and boating on Lake Erie where he owned a charter business. He was an assistant Softball coach at WHS for many seasons. Bill’s family and friends remember him for his great storytelling and jokes often while playing his ukulele.
Bill is survived by his sister, Bobbie Eggers of Clinton, IA ;son, Paul R. (Suzette) Coburn of Huron, OH; daughter Pauline (Donald) Saul of Orlando, FL; 5 Grandchildren, William (Aubrie) Coburn of Greensboro, NC, Melissa (Aaron) Parker of Huron, OH, Julie Coburn of Phoenix AZ, Scott Edwards of Sugarhill, GA, Stacey Saul of Arlington VA; 3 Greatgrandchildren, Colton Jenkins, Gavin Parker and Jackson William Coburn. Bill is also survived by his special friend and companion, Irene Thompson.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy “Dotty” (Rager) Coburn, brother, Joe Coburn, sister Martha Stanfield and an infant grandson, Paul Coburn, Jr.
Friends may call at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard on Friday, March 17, 2017 from 4 to 7 PM. Funeral services with Military Rites will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 11 AM with Rev. Tom Dove officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial expressions may be made to the Willard Elks Scholarship Fund, Inc or Stein Hospice. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.secorfuneralhomes.com.

Though I know that this is a difficult time for you, my hope is that you will be comforted from God’s inspired word the Bible. John 5:28,29 and Revelation 21: 3,4 gives hope of a future resurrection and the complete elimination of death, pain and mourning. Capt.Bill was a gentleman of the great lakes. He taught me many lessons on how to handle a vessel in rough waters and calm sea , how to “flag pole”at 70 years old,and laugh till my ribs hurt. Paul, Susie, Pauline, Irene, So very sorry that I didn’t know of Bills passing until yesterday at work. I will never forget your dad,(friend) he was such a joy to be around, talk with and enjoy much laughter and many good times and memories of boating days, and other fun get togethers. He will truly be missed, especially his smiling face and always a friendly, positive attitude. God be with all of you and know now he rests in peace. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Paul and Pauline, I’m so sorry to hear about Uncle Bill. I know we didn’t get to see each other that much, but when we did we had the best time. Lots of laughs. I loved our family get together’s. May God have his loving arms around you and give you comfort. Love you….Love you Uncle Bill.

My condolences to Bill’s family and friends. Bill was such a universally kind gentleman. My husband enjoyed a great relationship with Bill through their interest of fishing Lake Erie. I was pleased Bill participated with the Honor Guard at my husband’s burial services. R.I.P. Good Servant.
We were so saddened to hear of Bills passing from Irene today. Although we didn’t know him that well, we do know he was a very kind man and always enjoyed our visits at the office. Rest in peace Bill.
