Walter C. Bishop, age 94, resident of New Washington, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2007 in Heartland of Bucyrus. He was born on October 6, 1912 in New Washington to the late Frank and Rose (Oswald) Bishop and had been a resident of New Washington most of his life. Mr. Bishop worked in Akron at the Goodyear Plant during WWII where he helped build fighter planes. He then returned to New Washington and retired from the Mansfield Brass after 30 years. He is a member of the St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus in New Washington. He was an avid fisherman and also followed the Cleveland Indians. He enjoyed playing cards and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Walter also spent a lot of time in the woods hunting mushrooms, squirrel and raccoon.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gertrude (Hoehn) Bishop; six sons and daughter-in-laws, Donald and Joann Bishop of Shelby, Richard and Becky Bishop of Shelby, Stephen and Linda Bishop of Bucyrus, Alan and Sue of Bucyrus, Randy and Marcia Bishop of Bucyrus, and Roger and Sherri of Bucyrus; 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one brother, Linus Bishop of Mansfield; and one sister, Florence Heydinger of New Washington.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by five brothers, Clem, Joseph, Alton, Sylvester and Carl Bishop.
Friends may call at Secor Funeral Home in New Washington on Sunday from from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 AM at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church with Father Robert Dendinger officiating. Burial will follow in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery in New Washington. Memorial expressions can be made to the St. Bernard’s Endowment Fund or the Alzheimers Association.
