Phyllis M. (Ostermyer) Eppley passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at Grandma’s Place in New London, Ohio. She was 91, most of those years living in her beloved Chatfield, OH.

She was born January 6, 1932 to Elgar and Hazel Ostermyer. She was a sister to Faye (Don) Crum, and Jule Redman, both deceased.

Phyllis married Luther Eppley in 1950 and they loved each other over 60 years until his death in 2011. They had two daughters, Vicki (Fred) Karl, deceased in 1996 and Valerie (Gerald) Gibson.

She adored her grandchildren, Amanda Karl (Brian) Smith, Emily Karl (Kevin) Wallace, Jeremiah (Jennifer) Gibson, and Jordan (Laura) Gibson. She loved as a son, her former exchange student, Hilmar Gersie and his family Nicole and Leni, always considering them her family.

Also surviving her are her cherished great-grandchildren, Brandon, Taylor and Karli Smith; Addilyn, Ava and Jaxson Wallace; Mikayla Garcia, Zachary Smart, Zoe Secrist; Leni Gersie.

Her daughter, mother, mother-in-law, both granddaughters and five great grand daughters share her middle name, Marie.

Phyllis and Luther were well known as former owners of the Chatfield Hardware where she worked 33 years. She was the unofficial Chatfield historian, always active in the community and church. She loved collecting, ice cream, the color red, traveling, movies, crocheting, seashells, baking and giving away cookies.

Valerie, so sorry to learn of your mother’s passing. We have very found memories of both your mom and dad. Growing up in Chatfield they were a big part of everybody’s life. Your mom always had a smile for everyone. We had hoped to make back for her service.

I have been praying for Phyllis for 20 days and now I will change my prayer to the family of Phyllis. My father had the privilege of being her pastor, Luther Knauff, until we moved from Chatfield in 1957, and then my son was her pastor and a neighbor. She was a blessing to Tom's children. I know you will miss her.
EDGAR & BETTY SCHAMBACH - Sep 7, 2023
To Phyllis' family Betty and I extend our condolence and heartfelt love. From the very beginning of my ministry as pastor of Nazareth Lutheran Church, Luther and Phyllis became two of our dearest friends and they were the best of best neighbors. We shared many meals together and meals were always followed by games of Canasta--guys against gals. We shared lots of laughter, tears and stories over the years. One fond memory was Sunday dinner at their home. Phyllis asked if I enjoyed playing ping-pong. She was nonchalant about it. I said yes. I had expected a leisurely game, but after her first serve and wicked slam, game on! If memory serves me well, the games were tight and she had the satisfaction of winning. Again, our love to her family. -- Pastor Ed
