Patricia “Pat” (Kaple) Wechter, 93, was called to her eternal home on March 1, 2022.  Known as Pat to most, “Aunt Pat” to many, she was born July 16, 1928 in New Washington and spent her entire life in the New Washington community.  Pat was a loving, caring and kind person who knew no stranger and welcomed everyone.  Her home was always a place to gather with family and friends where a meal, a pie, and a hug were always ready for anyone who came to visit.  Although she always had a story or memory to share, she was always more interested in you than herself.

Pat graduated from New Washington High School where she met her life-long love, Sylvester, “Sonny” Wechter.  After high school, Pat attended beauty school in Toledo and later was a beautician, even owning her own salon called “Pattie’s Beauty Shop”.  She married Sonny on August 19, 1950 and celebrated the next 69 years together.  They raised four children Joseph (Lynn Murphy), John (Dawn Trimboli), Angela (John Schroeder), and James (Marjorie Hamilton).  They thoroughly enjoyed their ten grandchildren: Sheila (Brad) Fletcher, Brad Wechter, Rachel Smith (Nate Merritt), Andrew (Marianna) Wechter, Austin (Ashley) Wechter, Anthony (Tara) Schroeder, Cara (Chris) Russell, Casey Wechter (Brian Crist), Eric Wechter, and Caden Hall.  They also have 15 great grandchildren.

After their children were raised, Pat and Sonny enjoyed traveling and most of all, following and celebrating their grandchildren’s events and achievements.  Family was primarily their focus and her love for them was her legacy.

Pat also loved to bake, shop, play cards, dance and crochet. She had made and given away dozens of beautiful afghans and baby blankets over her lifetime.  She was also a faithful member St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and Rosary Alter Society in New Washington.  Pat instilled a strong faith life in her family.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Anna (Martin) Kaple, her husband, Sylvester “Sonny” Wechter, her nine siblings Bernard “Bud” Kaple, Dolly (Uhl), Vincent Kaple, Martina (Shackelford), John Kaple, Joan (Ervin), Jim Kaple, Donald Kaple, and Fr. Timon Kaple; and grandsons Mark Schroeder and Brad Wechter, all of whom she was so fond.  She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who shared a special bond with her.

Friends and family may attend a funeral mass officiated by Fr. George W. Mahas at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in New Washington, OH at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2022.  Per Pat’s request, in lieu of calling hours, her family would like to welcome everyone to a celebration dinner and gathering that will follow immediately after mass at St. Bernard’s gymnasium.  Assisting the family with arrangements is Secor Funeral Homes.  A private family burial will take place at St. Bernard’s Catholic cemetery at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Stein Hospice, 1912 Hayes Avenue, Sandusky, OH  44870, and O.F.M. Capuchins, Brother James Mungovin OFMCAP, Province of St. Augustine, 220 37th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. Online condolences may be made at http://www.secorfuneralhomes.com.

My condolences on the loss of your mom. Pat was always warm and welcoming. I knew Mom and Dad were watched over when we couldn’t be there and they enjoyed her visits tremendously. Many happy hours were spent at your home while I was growing up. My sons would always want to visit when we came home for the weekend too. May God watch over you through this difficult time.

Pat was a beacon of happiness in our neighborhood when we grew up. And was a good friend and watched over our parents as they aged. We greatly enjoyed her notes each year helping us keep track of the ever expanding list of grand- and great grand kids, all of which she was so proud of. We are sorry for your lose but join in celebrating a great soul.
