Harold Sylvester Niedermeier, age 97, resident of Plymouth, Ohio passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 27, 1927 in Attica, Ohio to the late George and Arvilla (Wechter) Niedermeier.

Harold graduated from Willard High School in 1945. He was then drafted into the Army where he served in the Korean War. During that time, he was awarded the Korean War medal, the Bronze Star medal, Presidential Unit Citation and the United Nations Service medal. While in the military, he was in the First Cavalry Artillery unit. In addition to this, he also spent time as a cook and as a driver for a general while in the service.

Harold was an active member of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in North Auburn and St. Bernard Catholic Church in New Washington. He was the oldest and longest member of the Willard Knights of Columbus.  He enjoyed volunteering at St Bernard’s School for over 25 years which included being a number caller for bingo.

Harold was a devoted husband to his wife Mary; they enjoyed 57 years of marriage. He cherished his large family.  He enjoyed playing euchre, listening to classic country and eating pie of almost any flavor. He could often be found on the back porch in his rocking chair holding a kitten or two reflecting on life, admiring his fields and deepening his friendships. Harold always attended his children’s sporting events and also watched Ohio State football and basketball.

Harold worked for the B&O Railroad and retired after 42 years. He was a lifelong farmer who also enjoyed coon hunting, cutting wood and fishing.

He is survived by his children, Jane (Randy) Laughbaum of Willard; Marcia (Terry) Niedermeier of Willard; David (Diane) Niedermeier of Mansfield; Donna (Ron) Wenninger of Tiro; John (Carol) Niedermeier of Willard; Vicki (Lee - deceased) Niedermeier of New Washington; Sharon (Randy) Niedermeier of New Washington; Kay (Neil) Cherian of Gates Mills, OH; Greg (Karen) Niedermeier of Crestline; Andy (Stacy) Niedermeier of Lone Tree, CO; Kara (Ed) Springer of Merritt Island, FL; twelve grandchildren, Heather, Cody, Lisa, Ryan, Cassie, Krista, Steven, Wiley, Lia, Noah, Payse and Slayton; five great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Patricia (Robert - deceased) Niedermeier; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. (Weithman) Niedermeier; two sons, Paul and Brian; two sisters, Mary Alice Nadeau and Sister Arline Niedermeier; and two brothers, Russell and Robert Niedermeier.
