George F. Shade, age 94, of New Washington, Ohio, passed away on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Altercare Nursing Facility in Bucyrus, Ohio.  He was born on February 23, 1928 in New Washington, Ohio to the late Ira and Anna (Wiegman) Shade.  George was a 1946 graduate of Chatfield High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He worked on the railroad for 44 years, starting with AC&Y Railroad and later retired from Norfolk and Southern Railway and he was a lifelong farmer.  He was an active member of the community including the New Washington Golden Gems, St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sulphur Springs and a 70-year member of the American Legion Post 405.  He was an avid gardener and loved Buckeye Central and OSU sports.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Paul) Weinberger of Johnstown, Ohio; son, James (Melissa) Shade of New Washington, Ohio; grandchildren, Amanda (Adam) Selvey, Isaac (Lauren Webster) Erckert, Laura Erckert, Adam Erckert, Tyler Shade, and Jacob Shade; great grandchild, Seif Selvey and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen (Buchanan) Shade whom he married on August 16, 1958 and a brother, Paul Shade and sister, Mary Deacon.

Visitation will be at Secor Funeral Home in New Washington, Ohio on Friday, July 29, 2022 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.  Visitation will continue at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 4707 Ridgeton-Annapolis Road, Sulphur Springs, Ohio 44881 on Saturday, July 30, 2022 from 10:00 AM until the time of his service at 11:00 AM with Pastor Hans Scherner officiating.  Burial will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in New Washington, Ohio.  Memorial contributions may be made to the New Washington Veterans Memorial Park Fund or the Buckeye Central Athletic Boosters.  Online condolences may be made to George’s family by visiting www.secorfuneralhomes.com

I met George while transporting him to kidney dialysis for Crawford County Council on Aging. I very much enjoyed talking to him about his life and the railroad. I will miss those talks. My sympathy to the family.
