George E. Painter Jr., age 84, of Willard, Ohio passed away Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, Ohio. He had resided at OVH since June 20, 2013.
He was born March 16, 1929 in Willard, Ohio to the late Viola Tieman Painter and George E. Painter Sr.
He graduated from Willard High School in 1947 and later attended banking schools at Ohio University and University of Wisconsin.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1952, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. His service included 11 months in Korea as an infantryman and later a Medic, being awarded both the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Combat Medical Badge.
He was employed for New Departure-Hyatt Division of General Motors Corporation 1948-1953, the former Willard United Bank from 1953-1989 retiring as Vice President; and the Willard Fire Department from 1953-2011, serving as Chief from 1989 till 1996. He enjoyed deer hunting, watching Willard sports, fixing items and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Willard. He served as Treasurer for the Willard Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Willard City Tree Commission. He served on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of Hillside Nursing Home. He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler, Treasurer, and Trustee of the Willard Elks #1370. He was a member of the Willard American Legion, Willard VFW and NRA.
George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Naomi (Hendrickson) Painter, whom he married April 25, 1953; his 3 children and their spouses, Mark (Edie) Painter of Willard, OH, Ann Painter of Kettering, OH and Scott (Crystal) Painter of Sunbury, OH. He is survived by his 6 grandchildren; Kent (Becky) Painter of Huron, OH, Ross (Lindsay) Painter of Willard, OH, Carisa Painter of Shelby, OH, Hannah Painter of Wilmington, NC, Holly Painter of Morehead City, NC and Abby Painter of Sunbury, OH.
He is also survived by a brother, Richard A. Painter of Willard, OH a sister, Marge (Painter) Clark of Wheat Ridge, CO as well as several niece, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Dolores (Painter) Watson in 1986, his brother, Duane “Skip” Painter in 2005, brother, Paul Painter in 2005, his mother, Viola Painter in 1976 and his father, George E. Painter Sr. in 1983.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 8, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard, Ohio. The funeral service will be Friday, August 9, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Willard, Ohio with Pastor Roger Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Willard, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church in Willard, the Willard Fire Fighters Association or to the Stein Hospice in Sandusky, OH.
