Gene A. Long, age 82, of Shelby, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at Crystal Care Nursing Center in Ashland, Ohio. He was born on May 3, 1939 in Willard, Ohio to the late Virgil and Velma (Cronenwett) Long.

Gene was a 1957 graduate of Willard High School who went on to work for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier from 1960 to 1999. A sports enthusiast, Gene held many positions for local sports events that included organizing YMCA sporting events and umpiring city, church or little leagues. Gene was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and enjoyed writing poetry and meeting every morning at McDonald’s for coffee. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carol (Bailey) Long; four children, Shelly (Trent) Heyman, Michael Long, Mark (Denise) Long, and Bryan Long; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two siblings, Linda Laux and Gary (Marty) Long; sister-in-law, Pat Long; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his grandsons, Jarred Heyman and Brock Long; and one brother, Ray Long.

Family and friends may visit at the Secor Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Gene’s funeral service will be held at the Christian Alliance Church, 1609 S Conwell Avenue, Willard, Ohio on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ricky Branham officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Willard. Online condolences can be left for the family by visiting www.secorfuneralhomes.com.
