Eugene "Gene" J. Songer, age 83, of Willard, Ohio passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born on January 19, 1941 in Republic, Ohio to the late Robert H. and Pearl (Regula) Songer. Gene had retired from RR Donnelley and Sons, was a member of the Grace Methodist Church, went on many church mission trips and enjoyed gardening. Gene was also served in the US Army, Ohio National Guard.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, whom he married on October 25, 1975; 2 sons, Cliff Songer of Aiken, SC and Michael Songer of Willard; 3 grandchildren, Danielle (Daniel) White of Lexington, SC, Jacob and Alisha Songer of Aiken, SC; sister, Miriam (Dennis) Bilyeu of Rockford, IL; sisters-in-law, Carole Lohr of Alameda, CA and Kay Lohr of West Hartford, CT; brother-in-law, Robert Lohr of Raleigh, NC.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 2 brothers, Duane Songer and Paul Songer.
The Secor Funeral Home in Willard, Ohio will assist the family with a graveside service at the Greenwood Cemetery in Willard, Ohio on Thursday, June 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Michael Leonard officiating. A luncheon will take place following the service at Grace Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grace Methodist Church or to Stein Hospice of Sandusky. Zeke was a good friend as we grew up together in Chatfield. I live on the west coast near Portland, OR. I have not seen him for many years. Last summer I spoke with Miriam and got an update on Gene. I moved from the Chatfield area in 1969. I always had a lot of respect for Zeke and truly appreciated the friendship and loyalty and fun that he shared with me in the group we ran with. I was blessed by the care and respect that he and I had for one another.
