Eugene E. “Nip” Shell passed away August 14, 2013 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Toledo, Ohio after a sudden illness. He was born to the late Albert and Viola (Cramer) Shell on May 5, 1935 in Auburn Township. He was a loving and ambitious man who loved his God, his country and his family, friends and community. He graduated from both New Washington High School in 1953 and Mansfield Business College. He worked for Kaple Lumber Co., Leon Shell Hardware, Shelby Spring Hinge in his early years, and as a supervisor at Country Star (Sunrise) Elevator for 50 years. He was a veteran serving in the Army National Guard and a lifetime member of the New Washington Carl Geiger American Legion Post, serving as Commander for many years. He served the community as a New Washington Council Member, member of New Washington Board of Public Affairs, Knights of Columbus’s past treasurer and presently President and Board Member of New Washington Golden Gems Senior Center and an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church.
He married Darlene Roth at St. Sebastians Catholic Church on April 15, 1961; surviving are his wife and 4 children, Jacqueline (Robert) Meade of Rome, Brian E. Shell of New Washington, Mark (Larysa) Shell of Towson, MD, Mjr. Craig (Sarah) Shell of Pearl City, HI; 5 grandchildren, Lindsay (Matt) Slone of Huron, Abigail Kohlhorst of New Washington, Evan Kohlhorst of Willard, Kristine and Alexander Shell of Towson, MD; 2 great grandchildren, Avery Slone of Huron and Brooklynn Osborn of New Washington; many step grandchildren and great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Richard (Alice) Shell of Tiro, Melvin (Judy) Shell of New Washington, Allison (Susan) Shell of Shelby; 2 sisters, Carolyn (Terry) Watson of Newark and Patricia (Custar) Crase of Norwalk; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Tanya Shell and 3 nephews, Christopher and Roger Shell and Matthew Studer.
Nip and his wife loved to travel, having travelled all 50 states, Europe, Canada and Mexico. He loved camping, fishing in Alaska and Lake Erie, going to auctions, collectingtea pots, gardening, canning and enjoyed his summer home in Catawba Island.
Visitation will be Sunday, August 18, 2013 from 2:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the Secor Funeral Home in New Washington. The funeral mass will be Monday, August 19, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Bernard Catholic Church in New Washington, with Fr. Eric Culler officiating. Burial will be at the St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery in New Washington. Memorial contributions may be made to New Washington EMS, Golden Gems Senior Center or St. Bernard Catholic Church.
