Donald S. “Dutch” Buss, age 87, of Willard, passed away on Sunday, June 14, 2009 at the Willard Healthcare Center. He was born February 16, 1922 in Willard, Ohio to the late Rudolph & Amelia (Artz) Buss and had been a life long Willard resident. He was a 1940 graduate of Willard High School and served in the US Navy during WWII and again during the Korean Conflict. Dutch was a retired machinist from the B&O Railroad in Willard. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Willard, the Willard VFW, American Legion and Elk’s Clubs.
Dutch grew up playing sports as a young boy and played up to the age of 70, when he was playing for 2 different softball leagues. He was also a gold medal winner, with his brother Homer, in the Senior Olympics. His love of sports kept him involved with the Willard High School where he was known for filming the football and basketball games for many years. He was one of the founding members of the Willard High School Hall of Fame, which he was inducted into in 2008. He was also a loyal fan of the Cleveland Indians, Cavs and Browns. Dutch enjoyed his sports, but what he loved the most was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Dutch is survived by his wife, Lila L. (Blankenship) Buss whom he married on November 8, 1953; one daughter Kim (David) Bailey of New London; 2 sons, Donnie (Carol) Buss of Willard; and Steve (Debra) Buss of Willard; 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by, 5 brothers, Lorne, Milton, Claron and Homer Buss; and an infant brother, Maynard.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Secor Funeral Home in Willard, and from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. on Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Chuch. The funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Willard, with Rev. Brian Peltomaa officiating. Burial will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Willard, Ohio. We were saddened to learn of Dutch’s passing. Our thought/prayers go out to the family. He truly touched the lives of many both on and off the field. He was instrumental in seeing that Scott’s brother, Clark, made it in the Willard Hame of Fame in 2006 for which we will always be grateful.
