God bless you Uncle Donnie. Although due to family circumstances changing during my childhood, I did not get to see you often after growing up, and I did not even learn of your death until way after the fact. But I loved you so much and will never, ever forget you. You were a special man. A loving soul, who made me laugh, and whom I looked up to as a scholar, and belief in making something of yourself in our lives. I can see you now at the grill helping to cook those brats! May you rest in peace. All my love. Amy

First of all Uncle Donnie was a big part of all our lives. Either in trying to teach us or by his card playing tricks. He was one of a kind person who if you met him you would not forget him. Lots of memories with our family growing up. We were all so close. I really miss those days. R I P Uncle Donnie, see you on the other sideā€¦.

Dr. Garner gave my academic career a good start with his counsel, mentoring and kindness. I keep the things he told me in mind as I teach, work with colleagues, prepare and edit scholarly articles. He was very special to me and my husband, Fred, and we will sorely miss him.
