Irwin Charles Fike, age 79, of Tiro, went to be with our Lord at 4:20 A.M.
Thursday, April 15, 2004 surrounded by his family. He died of major heart complications at MedCentral-Mansfield Hospital. He was born in New Washington to the late Harvey and Kathryn (Barnhart) Fike. He married Jane (Leonhart) Fike in 1948 and had two children. His wife preceded him in death in 1984.
He co-founded Leonhart Gas & Oil, Inc., in 1954, with his father-in law, Clarence Leonhart. He operated Leonhart Gas & Oil, with the help of his loving wife and son, Tim Fike, until 1992, when he retired due to serious health problems. He served during WWII, in the U.S. Navy, on the U.S.S. Gilbert Islands and was present at the peace-treaty signing of the surrender of Japan. He was a lifelong resident of the Tiro-New Washington area and an active contributor to his community and church, Crouse Memorial Lutheran.
Surviving are his daughter, Dawn Chamberlain of Sutton, Alaska; son and
daughter-in law, Tim and Mary Fike of Sycamore; his grandchildren, Riley
Fike and Samuel Fike of Sycamore; two sisters and a brother-in law, Charles
and Mildred Fleming of Birmingham, Alabama, and Betty Beal of Irving, Texas;
one brother and a sister-in law, Paul and Virginia Fike of Warner Robbins,
Georgia; a sister-in law, Hope Fike of New Washington; a very special
friend, Hazel Humphrey of Tiro; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Warren Fike of New
Washington, and Maurice Fike of Cleveland; and father-in law, Clarence
Leonhart of Tiro.
Memorial Services for family and friends will be held at a later published
date. Internment will be at St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Crouse Memorial Lutheran Church in Tiro; Friends of the Crawford Park District, Lowe/Volk Park Nature Center in Leesville; or Wildlife Haven in Tiro. Secor Funeral Home in New Washington, Ohio assisted the family with arrangements.
