Eldon “Bumper” Burkett, age 84, resident of Plymouth, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at his home. He was born on June 9, 1928 in Plymouth, to the late Omar and Norma (Milliron) Burkett. Eldon was a WWII Navy veteran, where he served as a plank owner on the USS Coral Sea. He worked at Wilken’s Air Force for 10 years and then went on to work for Plymouth Locomotive for many years as the Director of Engineering, from where he retired. He was a member of the Plymouth Area Lions Club for 35 years, the American Legion, Plymouth First Lutheran Church. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts and the Mary Fate Park Board. Eldon enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, was an avid tennis player, who always liked to win and enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Eldon is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Jo (Ganzhorn) Burkett; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and David Egner of Plymouth; his two sons and three daughters-in-law, Pastors Greg and Sandy Burkett of Galena, and David and Krista Burkett of Plymouth, and Nancy Burkett of Plymouth; 4 grandchildren, Melissa (Jay) Follett, Michelle (Justin) Dean, T.C. Burkett and Courtney Burkett; and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, William T. Burkett; grandson, Chad Burkett; and sister, Evelyn Buzard.
Friends may call on Sunday, March 17, 2013 from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Secor Funeral Home in Plymouth, where the funeral service will be held on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 10:30 AM, where Eldon’s daughter-in-law, Pastor Sandy Burkett will be officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Stein Hospice of Sandusky, Plymouth Area Lions Club or Plymouth First Lutheran Church.
