Dorothy Jean Gundrum Ferguson, age 87, passed away on January 10, 2010 after a lengthy illness. Dorothy was born on October 25, 1922 in Shelby, Ohio to O.H. Perry and Elva Quigg Gundrum. She graduated from Shiloh High School and was a member of the Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Shiloh, Ohio. On August 28, 1942 Dorothy married her soul mate, Harry Ferguson, who coincidentally shares her birthday.
In 1948 Harry and Dorothy purchased a farm they developed into Forgotten Acres Christmas Tree Farm which they operated for over 50 years. Their trees were part of Christmas for multiple generations of area familes. Dorothy’s skills were instrumental to their business success. Using her skill as a welder, Dorothy built the tree planter that was used to start and continue the business. Her Christmas Shop was also a highlight of the season.
Dorothy is also known for the beautiful afghans and needlework she created, her keenness with crossword puzzles and cooking expertise. Above all, Dorothy was devoted to her family. They share special memories of camping trips and vacations, attending auctions, and even welcoming her great grandson’s new puppy to the family.
In addition to Harry, Dorothy leaves behind a daughter, Susan Taylor of Shiloh; a son, John and Dolly Ferguson II; grandson, John and Sanjo Ferguson III; great grandson, John Ferguson IV; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Gundrum all of Shelby; brother-in-law, Arthur Ferguson of New Washington; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her five brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Lucille Gundrum, James and Millie Gundrum; Robert and
Genevieve Gundrum; John Gundrum and Perry Gundrum Jr. and sisters and brothers-in-law, Estelle and Carl Tredway, Ruth and Ray Bell Sr.; brothers-in-law, Eugene Ferguson, Eldon Ferguson, John Ferguson and sisters-in-law, and spouses, Elsie and John Willie, Mary and Mike Staiger and Carolyn and Maurice Lash.
Friends may call at the Secor Funeral Home in Plymouth on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at the Mt. Hope Lutheran Church in Shiloh with Reverend John Wanamaker and Sister Diane Hay officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shiloh. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Mt. Hope Lutheran Church, the Chaplin Services at Willard Mercy Hospital, or Hospice of North Central Ohio. I can’t find words adequate to tell you how much sorrow I feel for you and your family. I still haven’t come to grips with the loss of my wife 6 years ago and haven’t forgotten the pain and the overpowering sense of loss when a loved one passes away, so I know what you are going through. You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers
and Ihope you will find comfort in knowing that she is now in a better place and no longer in pain

Without a doubt the family of Dorothy knows nothing about me. Dorothy’s mother (Elva) and my mother Adytha Burrer were almost like family. Both those ladies were active in the Daughters of America lodge in Shelby. Both of them raised 8 children. Believe Dorothy was 8th in her family and I was 8th in our family. Both of our families were quite close. Many social activities are well remembered. It is with deep sorrow to learn of the passing of Dorothy. Please accept my deepest sympathies in her passing.

So sorry to hear of your loss. I will keep you in my prayers. Harry you and Dorthy always treated me as family and I enjoyed working for both of you. I always knew when Dorthy was around we would never go hungry. The lord sure blessed her with her cooking.I’m sure I was blessed to have known her and the many lessons she taught me.

Harry, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry, I know this is very difficult for you all. I pray God will comfort you as He has comforted me and my family. Just remember, memories are a way of holding onto the ones you love and treasure, keep fond memories in your heart, for they will last a lifetime.
